I have a great great show in New York City that opens on August 6, 2010. I live in San Francisco, Ca. I can’t afford the expenses of the exhibit. So I am trying this fund raising effort below.

Some theory about my upcoming show at The Jack Hanley Gallery

Sometimes it feels like the apocalypse. Endless wars draining the US treasury, no money for health care, education or jobs. The planet is getting destroyed right before our eyes. Today. Right now. It makes me wonder what to do with my life.
I am sticking with art, for now.

California Monterey Pines, the trees that I have been using for my new pieces, are covered with a healing lichen (Usnea Barbata, commonly referred to as Old Man’s Beard, Beard Lichen, or Treemoss). This lichen has a symbiotic relationship between fungus and alga. (We CAN all get along)!
A tree covered with traditional healing herbs. If the forests lose their root system-the very ground on which they stand-so our planet loses grounding as well. How little control even the most ingenious among us have over the awesome, intricately interconnected natural forces with which we so casually meddle.
Our culture has made an excruciatingly dangerous and arrogant claim to have such complete understanding and command over nature, claiming that we can radically manipulate and re-engineer it with minimal risk to the natural systems that sustain us.

It can be so overwhelming, this heedless destruction of nature. I feel compelled to do something, to pay homage to the perfectness of the natural world. So, I thought, why not start in my back yard with trees? And yet, try and show something ominous is happening.

Maybe it all started with Sir Francis Bacon, he best encapsulated the new ethos when he wrote in the 1623 De dignitate et augmentis scientiarum that nature is to be “put in constraint, moulded, and made as it were new by art and the hand of man.”
It reads like a Greek tragedy about human hubris. A political class eager to believe that nature had indeed been mastered. Augmenting nature.

A technologically mutated organic hybrid to of and for trees.

1. A bio-engineered permutation.
(a.) a deliberate attempt to cross two parents with desirable characteristics and incorporate said characters in next generations.
(b.) a synthesis of nature and technology
(c.) to produce an anomaly.
2. Deviant transmogrification.
(a.) post nature.
(b.) new species struggling for life.
(c.) an unholy marriage.
3. The Paradox of Technology.
(a.) It could save us. can it save us?
(b.) It is killing us.

I want to save the world, to stop the fascists destroying our planet and economy. It can be so overwhelming. So, I thought, why not start in my own back yard. An endangered species.

The opening night will also include BB-Q from a machine/tree BB-Q the DJ stylings of only San Francisco, California musics by multiple Ca. x-pats.

The philosophy of cosmicism states that there is no recognizable divine presence, such as God, in the universe, and that humans are particularly insignificant in the larger scheme of intergalactic existence. Perhaps we are just a small species projecting our own mental idolatries onto the vast cosmos, ever susceptible to being wiped from existence at any moment. This also suggests that in the context of a much greater struggle between large-scale universal forces, the majority of undiscerning humans are creatures with the no more significance than insects. The theory of cosmicism was developed and used by the American writer H. P. Lovecraft.
